SUMMARY:The Role of Black & Indigenous Pedagogies in Shaping Global Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:The Black Research Network (BRN) is a Research Conversation Series connecting University of Toronto researchers for insightful and meaningful conversations about Black-led research and leadership. \nTopic: The Role of Black and Indigenous Pedagogies in Shaping Global Classrooms \nHow do Black and Indigenous pedagogical approaches challenge dominant educational frameworks? What does it look like to center these methodologies in global classrooms? \nIn the fourth installment of the BRN Research Conversation Series\, join the BRN’s Black Indigenous Waterways inaugural recipients Jade Nixon (PhD candidate\, Women and Gender Studies Institute at the University of Toronto) and kara lynch (Associate Professor Emerita\, Hampshire College) as they discuss decolonial approaches to teaching and research and how their respective work considers Black Indigenous histories and relationships. \nThe conversation will be followed by a Q&A session. \nPlease note that this event will take place virtually. Please register to attend. https://brn.utoronto.ca/event/brn-research-conversation-series-the-role-of-black-and-indigenous-pedagogies-in-shaping-global-classrooms/ \nAbout the Speaker: \nJade Nixon is a postdoctoral candidate at the University of Toronto’s Women and Gender Studies Institute (WGSI). Her research centers Black women’s theories of gathering\, place-making\, and their relations with the Atlantic Ocean. Her dissertation focuses on the relationship that Black women have to a Caribbean Carnival-related gathering onboard a ship in the Atlantic called the Ubersoca Cruise. Nixon was named the BRN’s inaugural Black Indigenous Waterways Postdoctoral Fellow in 2024. \nkara lynch is a New York-based artist and associate professor emerita of video and critical studies at Hampshire College. A time-based artist\, lynch’s work considers autonomy for Black and Indigenous communities\, specifically through re-memory\, vision and movement. Through various collaborations and solo works\, lynch has fostered conversations about these shared histories\, mainly in the United States. She joined the BRN as its inaugural Artist in Residence (AiR) in 2024.

SUMMARY:Cutting Through Elections Noise: A Forum for Building Community Power
DESCRIPTION:Join Social Development Centre Waterloo Region on Feb 21 – to talk about social change that uses local tools. \nSome of the engaging topics include: \nThings are not okay\, and we can all feel it. \nMass layoffs seem imminent in the face of a looming tariff war. Housing costs are eating up an ever-increasing share of our incomes. Our schools are under-funded. Our hospitals are inundated. And homeless encampments have become entrenched\, as more people are pushed into poverty. All of this against a backdrop of dizzying political announcements – new legislation\, new funding\, new election timelines – and yet\, no improvement in the realities we see around us. \nBut history has shown us that social change is possible. \nThe rejection of encampment evictions at 100 Victoria St. in Kitchener. The overturning of land swaps at the heart of Ontario’s Greenbelt scandal. The change in a 13-year stance when Canada condemned Israeli settlements in occupied-Palestine. Time and again\, we’ve seen deep-seated political forces fall apart in the face of sustained community action. \nLet’s turn our collective anxiety into something productive. \nJoin us on Feb. 21 and together\, we can combat the feeling that we’re on our own. We can listen and care for one another\, even as our systems fail us. And in the midst of so much noise\, we can practise building local\, collective power to create the future we want. \nSome Resources Your May Find Helpful in The Lead Up to Election Day \nWith the provincial election announced a mere 28 days before Election Day\, we understand many voters don’t feel like they have enough time to get to know their candidates or the platforms of their respective parties. Here are some of the resources we’ve come across that you might find helpful: \n\nA primer of questions about decent work and cost of living (Justice for Workers)\nCandidate responses to questions compiled locally by One Millions Neighbours Waterloo Region\nResources for voters who care about Good Food for All (Sustain Ontario)\nSearch for your candidate’s campaign page (Elections Ontario)\nPromises made by each of the 4 parties (Global News)\nHow to cast your vote on or before Election Day (Elections Ontario)
